90 apartments arranged
across three blocks within the Kitchener Barracks development by TopHat.

Within the historic Kitchener Barracks site in Chatham, TopHat’s residential redevelopment delivers 90 apartments across three contemporary blocks set alongside Grade II listed buildings. The project called for a facade system that could sensitively balance heritage context with modern performance – and Mauerwall provided the perfect fit.

Selected for its ability to replicate bespoke brick colours and finishes, Mauerwall enabled the design team to create a roman-format facade in a light, chalky tone that complements the surrounding architecture while giving the new buildings their own identity. The system’s precision engineering allowed both horizontal and vertical bond detailing to be expressed cleanly on the elevations, enhancing proportion and rhythm while reducing the number of panels and joints for faster installation.

Installed onto an Ash & Lacy subframe, Mauerwall delivered a high-quality, non-combustible facade that meets the aesthetic and technical demands of a conservation setting. Suitable for any building height when fixed to an appropriate substrate, the system demonstrates how traditional character and modern construction efficiency can coexist beautifully.
